Cloudy Headlights: What Causes It and Can It Actually Be Fixed?

Cloudy or yellowed headlights are caused by UV degradation of the polycarbonate lens, not dirt on the surface, and in the vast majority of cases they can be fully restored rather than replaced. The exceptions are a physically cracked lens or a headlight with moisture trapped inside the housing, which restoration can't fix.

Before booking a restoration, wash the headlights properly first. Dust from unpaved sections of road in summer and salt film in winter both build up a surface grime that can look a lot like early oxidation from a few metres away, and a proper wash sometimes clears most of it on its own. If the haze is still there once the lens is clean and dry, that's genuine oxidation and restoration is the right call.

What's actually happening to the plastic

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic that leaves the factory with a UV-resistant coating baked in. Years of sun exposure gradually wear that coating away, and once it's gone the bare plastic underneath starts to oxidize, turning hazy and eventually yellow. It's a normal aging process, not a sign anything was done wrong, and it affects nearly every vehicle a few years old or more.

Cloudy vs. yellowed vs. foggy on the inside: three different problems

Cloudy or hazy lenses are early-stage surface oxidation, fully restorable. Deep yellowing is the same process further along, still restorable but needing more sanding stages to fully clear. Fogging or visible water droplets on the inside of the lens is a completely different problem: a failed housing seal letting moisture in behind the lens. No amount of surface polishing reaches that, since it's not on the surface at all, it needs a reseal or, if the housing is damaged, a replacement.

A quick check before you assume restoration is needed

Wipe the lens with a wet cloth first. If the haze visibly reduces while wet and returns once it dries, that's surface oxidation, restoration fixes it. If you see condensation or actual water droplets on the inside of the lens that you can't reach from outside, that's a seal failure, not oxidation, and needs a different repair entirely. Grime and road film can also mimic light haze from a distance, so a wash is worth trying before booking anything.

Does it actually affect safety, or is it just cosmetic

Both, but the safety side matters more than most people think. Oxidized, yellowed lenses noticeably reduce how much light actually reaches the road at night, even with the bulb working perfectly, since the degraded plastic scatters and absorbs light instead of transmitting it cleanly. Drivers usually notice a real difference in visibility immediately after restoration, not just a cosmetic one.

Can I fix cloudy headlights myself with toothpaste or a DIY kit?

These can superficially improve very light haze for a short time, but they don't fully remove the oxidized layer and don't include a proper UV sealant afterward, so the cloudiness typically returns within weeks. Professional multi-stage restoration with a UV sealant lasts considerably longer.

Are cloudy headlights actually dangerous?

Yes. Oxidized lenses meaningfully reduce how much light reaches the road at night, which is a real safety issue, not just a cosmetic one, even when the bulbs themselves are completely fine.

What if there's moisture inside my headlight, not just cloudiness on the surface?

That's a seal failure letting moisture into the housing, a different problem from surface oxidation. Restoration won't fix it since the issue isn't on the surface at all. It needs the housing reseal or, if damaged, a replacement. We'll tell you honestly which applies once we've inspected it.

Will my headlights get cloudy again after restoration?

Not for a long time, provided a proper UV sealant is applied and the vehicle is looked after normally. The sealant is what actually prevents recurrence; bare, unsealed polycarbonate will start oxidizing again within months.
