"Polishing" gets used as an umbrella term for two genuinely different jobs. A light enhancement polish uses a fine finishing compound to boost gloss and smooth minor surface haze without removing much material, suited to paint that's basically sound but looks flat. Full paint correction is a more intensive multi-stage process using more aggressive compounds to physically remove real defects like swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation. Quoting "polishing" without knowing which one applies is like quoting car repair without knowing what's broken.

Wash and dry the car, then check it under strong direct light, a flashlight held at a low angle works well, in a dim area. If you see a web of fine circular scratches or hazing that wasn't visible in normal light, that's swirl marks, and it usually means full correction is the right call. If the paint just looks a little flat or lacks depth from a few metres away but shows no obvious marks up close under light, a lighter enhancement polish is often enough.

Single-stage jobs are faster and cheaper than the two-stage process heavier defects require. Adding protection afterward (wax, sealant, or ceramic coating) is priced separately and optional, though we'll always recommend something, since freshly polished paint with no protection starts picking up new damage almost immediately.

Often, yes. Polishing removes existing damage and restores gloss, but doesn't protect the paint from new damage on its own. Pairing a polish with a ceramic coating locks in the result and means the paint stays looking corrected for years instead of picking up new swirls within weeks of regular washing. It's not mandatory, plenty of clients polish alone and maintain it with regular waxing, but if you're already paying for correction, protecting that result is usually worth the extra cost.
